What is Touch Typing?
Touch typing is the practice of typing without looking at the keyboard. It relies on consistent finger placement and muscle memory to reach keys accurately and quickly.
Home Row
The home row is the central row of keys where fingers rest: A S D F (left) and J K L ; (right). The F and J keys usually have tactile markers to help you position your hands without looking.
Finger Placement
- Left index: F and surrounding keys; right index: J and surrounding keys.
- Use the correct finger for each key rather than stretching a favorite finger.
- Keep wrists relaxed and float your fingers over the home row.
Should you look at the keyboard?
To learn touch typing, try to minimize looking at the keys. Use the tactile F and J markers and rely on the finger guide in the application to build confidence.
Common beginner mistakes
- Looking down constantly instead of building muscle memory.
- Using two-finger hunting technique.
- Chasing speed rather than focusing on accuracy first.
- Poor posture and hand positioning.
How often to practice
Short practice sessions (10–25 minutes) most days of the week are more effective than occasional long sessions. Gradually increase difficulty and lesson length as accuracy improves.
